Itching Below the Eyes: What to Know

The skin below the eyes is thin and can react to eye makeup, cleansers, moisturisers, sunscreen, nail products transferred by rubbing, hair products, dust, or pollen. [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/) may cause itchy, dry, red, or swollen skin; [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/) can affect people with sensitive skin. Hives are usually raised and transient. Itching with a gritty eye, discharge, marked redness of the eye itself, or vision change may involve the eye rather than only the surrounding skin.

Stop eye makeup and newly introduced products until the skin settles, and avoid rubbing. Rinse gently with clean lukewarm water, pat dry, and use a bland fragrance-free moisturiser on the skin below the eye, keeping products out of the eye. A cool clean compress may reduce itch and swelling. Do not apply steroid, antibiotic, or antifungal cream near the eye unless a clinician has advised the specific product and use.

Seek prompt care for eye pain, light sensitivity, vision change, pus-like discharge, significant swelling, fever, or redness of the eye. Urgent help is needed for sudden facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction. Arrange a review when symptoms persist, recur, or affect both skin and eyes.
