Itching Behind the Ears: What to Know

The fold behind an ear can collect sweat and remain damp, while hair products, glasses, mask loops, headphones, earrings, or hair dye may touch it. Look for scaling, redness, cracks, crusting, moisture, tenderness, or a rash extending into the scalp. Keep nails short and use a cool compress instead of scratching. Do not put cotton buds, alcohol, essential oils, or steroid and antifungal medicines into the ear canal. Seek care if pain, warmth, swelling, pus, spreading redness, fever, hearing changes, or fluid from the ear develops. Get urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction.
