Itching Before a Period: Could You Be Pregnant?

Hormonal shifts around the menstrual cycle may change skin sensitivity, but itching is not a dependable way to detect pregnancy. A new soap, pad, liner, detergent, tight clothing, sweat, shaving, eczema, psoriasis, or yeast-related infection can cause itching in the vulva or elsewhere. If pregnancy is possible, a missed period and a pregnancy test are more useful than the symptom itself; timing and test instructions matter.

Pay attention to where the itch occurs and whether there is a rash, discharge, burning when passing urine, sores, abdominal pain, or bleeding. Symptoms after a new product suggest irritation, while persistent or unusual genital symptoms need an examination.

Use unscented products, rinse gently, pat dry, wear loose breathable clothing, and avoid scratching. If pregnancy is possible, take a home pregnancy test according to its instructions and repeat or seek clinical advice if the result is negative but your period does not arrive. Do not start oral or topical medicine for genital itching without checking that it is suitable if pregnant.

Arrange care for persistent, recurrent, or worsening itch, unusual discharge or odour, sores, urinary pain, or a rash that does not settle. Seek urgent help for severe lower abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, fever, or facial swelling and breathing difficulty. If you are pregnant or may be pregnant, contact a clinician about new widespread itching or itching with yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Ask whether you need a pregnancy test, skin or vaginal examination, or a swab; which products are safe if pregnant; and what changes should prompt urgent review.
