Itching at the Vulvar Area: What to Know

Fragranced washes, wipes, pads, liners, detergents, tight clothing, shaving, and sweat can irritate delicate vulvar skin. Contact dermatitis may cause redness, burning, or rawness where a product touches. Eczema or psoriasis can cause persistent itch and visible patches. A yeast infection may cause itching with soreness or a change in discharge, but symptoms overlap, so the symptom alone cannot confirm the cause.

Tell a clinician about discharge, odour, pain when passing urine, pain with sex, blisters, ulcers, bleeding, pregnancy, recent antibiotics, or a new sexual partner. These clues may point to different tests and treatments.

Rinse with lukewarm water or a mild unscented cleanser, then pat dry. Wear loose breathable underwear, change out of damp clothes, and avoid douching, deodorant sprays, scented products, and scratching. A cool compress over clothing may ease discomfort. Avoid borrowing or repeatedly trying medicated creams, especially steroid combinations, because they can obscure the appearance and may not treat the actual cause.

Book an assessment if itching lasts, returns, disrupts sleep, or comes with unusual discharge, odour, pain, or visible skin changes. Seek prompt care for severe pain, fever, pelvic pain, spreading redness, pus, bleeding unrelated to your period, or new blisters or ulcers. During pregnancy, contact your maternity team about persistent vulvar itching or any associated symptoms. Emergency help is needed for facial swelling or breathing difficulty.

Ask whether the skin needs an examination or swab, whether a product or medicine could be responsible, which treatment is safe if pregnant, and how to prevent the irritation from returning.
