Short answer

Itching at night during pregnancy may come from dry or inflamed skin, but intense itch without a rash needs prompt maternity advice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Report promptly
Intense nighttime itch, especially on palms or soles
Comfort
Cool compresses, bland moisturiser, and loose clothing
Avoid
Self-starting medicines or herbal products without pregnancy advice

Possible explanations

Pregnancy can stretch and dry the skin, and heat, sweat, soaps, or clothing may aggravate dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, hives, and yeast infection can also occur during pregnancy. However, new or intense itch, especially on the palms or soles, or itch that is worse at night without a clear rash, can be a sign of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. This condition involves bile flow and needs assessment because it can affect pregnancy care. Itching is not proof of a liver problem, but the pattern should be reported rather than self-treated.

Safe comfort measures

Contact your maternity team or obstetric clinician about new, persistent, or strong itching. While waiting for advice, use cool compresses, short lukewarm showers, fragrance-free moisturiser, loose cotton clothing, and a cool sleeping environment. Keep nails short and pat or press itchy skin instead of scratching. Do not start oral medicines, herbal products, steroid creams, or antifungal treatments in pregnancy without checking the product and dose with a qualified clinician. Note the areas affected, whether a rash is present, and any change in urine or stool colour.

When to seek care

Seek same-day maternity advice for widespread or severe itch, itch on the palms or soles, nighttime itch with no rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, right upper abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement. Emergency care is appropriate for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or severe illness. Do not wait for a rash before calling.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether bile-acid and liver tests are needed, how results will be followed, which skin products are pregnancy-appropriate, and what fetal monitoring or return precautions apply.

Questions people ask

Is itching in pregnancy always a rash-related problem?

No. It may be skin irritation, but intense itch without a rash can need maternity assessment for cholestasis.

Can I use an anti-itch medicine while pregnant?

Check with your maternity clinician or pharmacist first, because suitability depends on the product, dose, and stage of pregnancy.
