Itching at night in the pubic area: what to know

The pubic region is exposed to sweat, friction, shaving, hair-removal products, detergents, pads, condoms, and fragranced washes. Contact dermatitis may cause itch, redness, scaling, or burning after a new exposure. A skin yeast infection often affects warm, moist folds and may cause soreness or a clearly irritated border. Scabies can cause intense nighttime itch and may affect close contacts; small bumps or burrows can be difficult to see. Psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, lichen planus, and hives are other possibilities. Itch alone cannot identify the cause, and a pubic itch does not by itself indicate a sexually transmitted infection.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and avoid scrubbing, douching, deodorant sprays, and fragranced products. Wear loose, breathable underwear and change after sweating. Pause shaving and any newly introduced product until the skin settles. Keep fingernails short and use a cool compress rather than scratching. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, or insect-treatment creams to genital skin without checking that the product is suitable; the wrong treatment can mask the pattern or irritate delicate skin. Note timing, triggers, visible changes, and whether anyone sharing your home is itchy.

Arrange a medical assessment if the itch persists, repeatedly wakes you, spreads, or returns after self-care. Seek prompt care for blisters, ulcers, marked swelling, pus, fever, painful urination, unusual discharge, or rapidly worsening pain. If scabies is suspected, household and close-contact advice may be needed, so avoid treating only one person without guidance.

Ask whether the appearance fits contact dermatitis, a yeast infection, scabies, or another condition; whether an examination or test is needed; which products are safe near the genitals; and how to prevent recurrence.
