Itching Around the Vulva: What to Know

Vulvar skin can react to soaps, wipes, pads, laundry products, lubricants, condoms, hair removal, and friction. Contact dermatitis may cause burning, redness, or scaling; atopic dermatitis can make skin dry and itchy. Skin yeast infection is another possibility, while psoriasis or lichen planus may cause persistent patches or changes in texture. Discharge, odour, internal vaginal itching, sores, urinary burning, or pain during sex may indicate a vaginal, urinary, or sexually transmitted cause. Itch alone cannot identify the cause.

A clinician may examine the external skin and ask about products, periods, medicines, sexual exposure, and symptom changes. Testing may be useful when discharge or infection is suspected.

Rinse the external vulva with lukewarm water, pat dry, and use a mild unscented cleanser only if needed. Avoid douching, scented products, deodorants, wipes, and fragranced pads. Choose loose clothing and breathable underwear, change after sweating, and pause hair removal while irritated. Try not to scratch; cool compresses over clean fabric may soothe briefly. Keep creams and treatments out of the vagina unless the product is specifically intended for that use and a pharmacist or clinician confirms it fits your symptoms.

Seek prompt care for severe pain, marked swelling, fever, pus, blisters, ulcers, bleeding unrelated to a period, or difficulty urinating. Arrange an appointment for new discharge, strong odour, possible sexual exposure, pregnancy, skin colour or texture changes, or symptoms that keep returning. Urgent help is needed if a widespread rash comes with facial swelling or breathing difficulty.
