Itching Around the Groin in Females: What to Know

Moisture and friction in the groin folds can irritate skin, especially after exercise or in tight clothing. Shaving, hair-removal products, sanitary products, detergents, and fragranced washes can trigger contact dermatitis. Eczema may cause dry, cracked, itchy skin, while skin yeast infection tends to affect warm, moist creases. Psoriasis, lichen planus, hives, and scabies are other possibilities. If itching is mainly on the vulva and comes with discharge, odour, burning, sores, or pain during urination, a vaginal or urinary cause also needs consideration.

The location of the itch, the appearance of the skin, and associated symptoms help a clinician decide whether examination or testing is needed.

Keep the folds clean and dry, rinse away sweat, and change damp clothing promptly. Choose loose clothing and breathable underwear. Use unscented laundry products and avoid douches, sprays, wipes, and fragranced pads. Pause shaving while the skin is inflamed. Pat rather than rub after washing, and keep fingernails short to limit injury from scratching. Do not use a treatment inside the vagina or on broken skin without suitable advice.

Get prompt medical advice for a painful lump, spreading redness, marked swelling, fever, pus, blisters, ulcers, or difficulty urinating. Book an assessment for new discharge or odour, symptoms after possible sexual exposure, pregnancy, repeated episodes, or itching that persists after irritants are removed. Sudden breathing difficulty or swelling of the face with a widespread rash requires urgent help.
