What should you know about itching around the genital area?

The skin may itch on the outer genital area, the groin folds, or nearby skin. Itching alone does not identify the cause. The appearance of the skin, the timing, any discharge or pain, and recent exposures help a clinician narrow it down.

Fragranced soap, shower gel, wipes, sanitary products, laundry products, tight clothing, sweat, or friction can irritate sensitive skin. Contact Dermatitis presents with itching, redness, burning, or a rash after contact with an irritant or allergen.

Skin Yeast Infection can present with itching and a red, moist rash, especially in warm skin folds. Atopic Dermatitis can present with dry, itchy, inflamed skin, while Psoriasis may affect the groin with well-defined irritated patches. Lichen Planus can present with persistent itchy or sore changes in genital skin. Scabies can cause intense itching and may affect genital skin, often with itching elsewhere too. Hives cause raised, itchy areas that can appear and fade.

Vaginal or penile discharge, sores, blisters, pain when passing urine, or a new sexual exposure can point to an infection that needs a clinical assessment. Avoid assuming that a familiar-looking rash has the same cause as a previous episode.

Wash the external area gently with lukewarm water or a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Keep the area cool and dry, change out of damp clothing promptly, and choose loose, breathable underwear. Stop new fragranced or medicated products until the skin settles.

Try not to scratch; rubbing can create small breaks in the skin and increase irritation. Do not put steroid, antifungal, antiseptic, or other medicated creams inside the vagina, on the penis opening, or around the anus unless a clinician or pharmacist has advised you how to use them. Avoid douching and avoid sex if it worsens pain or irritation.

Arrange an assessment if the itch persists, keeps returning, spreads, or is accompanied by a rash, discharge, odour, sores, swelling, or urinary symptoms. A clinician may inspect the skin and recommend a swab or other test when an infection is possible.

Seek prompt medical care for severe genital pain, rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, fever, pus, open sores, blisters, or difficulty passing urine. Seek urgent help for facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, or faintness with an itchy rash.

Book a clinical review for persistent or recurrent itching, bleeding, a new lump, skin colour or texture changes, or symptoms after a new sexual partner. Children, pregnant people, and people with weakened immunity should seek advice sooner rather than self-treating.

Ask: What does the skin change suggest, and do I need testing? Could a product, medicine, infection, or inflammatory skin condition be contributing? Which treatment is safe for this exact area, how should it be applied, and what should I avoid while it heals? Should a partner or household contact be assessed?
