Itching around the anus: what should you know?

Moisture, sweat, stool residue, friction, scented wipes, and over-washing can inflame the delicate skin. Contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, lichen planus, hives, and asteatotic eczema may also cause itch or visible changes. A skin yeast infection can produce redness and soreness; scabies may cause intense itch and affect other household members.

Seek prompt care for blood, pus, fever, severe pain, a new lump, marked swelling, or skin that is cracking or failing to heal. Urgent assessment is needed for severe pain with fever, rapidly spreading redness, or difficulty passing stool. Recurrent symptoms also deserve a clinician's examination.
