Itching arms during pregnancy: what should you know?

Short answer
Itching arms during pregnancy is often linked to dry or irritated skin, but widespread or severe itching needs maternity advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Gentle care
- Fragrance-free moisturiser, cool compresses, and breathable clothing
- Report promptly
- Severe nighttime itching, especially on palms or soles
What may be causing it
Pregnancy can make skin feel drier or more sensitive. New soaps, laundry products, fabrics, heat, and friction may irritate the arms. Eczema, contact dermatitis, hives, or psoriasis can flare or first become noticeable during pregnancy. A rash with small bumps or plaques may provide useful clues.
Itching without much of a rash can have causes that need medical review, including pregnancy-related liver problems. Itching that spreads to the palms or soles, becomes intense at night, or occurs with dark urine, pale stools, yellowing of the skin or eyes, nausea, or unusual tiredness should be reported promptly to your maternity team.
Ways to ease the skin
Use a fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, especially after a lukewarm wash. Choose loose, breathable clothing, keep the room cool, and use a cool compress instead of scratching. Replace newly introduced soaps, creams, and detergents with simple, fragrance-free options.
Check every medicine, cream, antihistamine, or herbal product with your obstetric clinician, midwife, or pharmacist before using it. Keep a brief record of when the itch occurs, where it spreads, and whether a rash appears.
When to contact your maternity team
Contact your maternity team promptly for severe or widespread itching, itching that is strongest at night, or itching without a clear rash. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, a rapidly spreading blistering rash, fever, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.
Questions for your clinician
Ask whether your symptoms need blood tests, whether the pattern fits eczema or a pregnancy-related condition, and which moisturisers or medicines are suitable at your stage of pregnancy. Tell them about sleep disruption, palms or soles involvement, and any change in urine, stool, or skin colour.

Questions people ask
Is itchy skin always a pregnancy complication?
No. Dryness and irritation are common explanations, but persistent, severe, or widespread itching should still be assessed.
Can I use my usual anti-itch cream?
Check with your maternity clinician or pharmacist first, because suitability varies by ingredient and pregnancy stage.
