Itching and Pain in the Eyes: What to Know

Dust, smoke, cosmetics, contact lenses, or a product near the eyes can irritate the surface or eyelids. Allergy often brings itch and watering, while eyelid inflammation can cause crusting or soreness along the lashes. Skin conditions such as [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/) or [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/) may involve the eyelid skin.

Pain is less typical of simple itch and can signal a corneal surface problem, infection, injury, or inflammation inside the eye. Do not assume a rash elsewhere explains eye pain. The location of discomfort, redness, discharge, and effect on vision help a clinician decide what to examine.

Stop using eye makeup and contact lenses until symptoms have settled or a clinician advises otherwise. Do not rub the eyes; rinse with clean water if a chemical or loose particle entered them, and use a cool clean compress for comfort. Avoid sharing towels or eye products.

Book an assessment if symptoms persist, recur, or include discharge, eyelid swelling, a foreign-body sensation, or marked redness. Use only eye drops recommended for your situation; skin creams are not automatically suitable for the eye.

Seek urgent care for sudden vision change or loss, severe pain, strong light sensitivity, an injury, chemical exposure, a bulging eye, or rapidly increasing swelling. Fever with swelling around the eye also needs urgent review.

Ask: Is the problem on the eye surface, eyelid, or surrounding skin? Should I stop lenses or a product? Do I need a vision check, stain test, or prescription treatment? What symptoms mean I should return urgently?
