What should you know about itching and irritation in the pubic area?

Shaving, waxing, sweat, tight clothing, and fragranced washes can irritate the outer pubic skin. Contact Dermatitis may cause redness, burning, scaling, or itch after exposure to a product. A Skin Yeast Infection can affect warm, moist folds and may cause soreness or a defined rash. Scabies can cause intense itching, often worse at night, and may affect close contacts. Genital discharge, sores, blisters, pain when urinating, or pelvic pain point to a need for medical assessment rather than self-treatment.

Pause shaving and stop new soaps, wipes, deodorants, and intimate washes. Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, wear loose breathable underwear, and change after sweating. Do not put steroid, antifungal, or antiseptic products inside the vagina, penis opening, or anus unless a clinician has advised it. Avoid scratching and sexual contact if there are sores, pain, or possible infection until assessed.

Seek prompt care for severe swelling, spreading redness, pus, fever, marked pain, open sores, blisters, or pain when urinating. Arrange a sexual-health or medical review for unusual discharge, bleeding, a new partner with symptoms, recurrent irritation, or itch that does not settle after removing an obvious irritant. Emergency help is needed for rapidly developing facial or genital swelling with breathing difficulty.
