Itching and Allergy Medicine: Safe Next Steps

Antihistamines can help when histamine is driving raised, short-lived welts or allergy symptoms. They may provide little relief when itch comes from very dry skin, eczema, a fungal rash, scabies, a medicine reaction, or another problem. Some products can cause drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, or reduced alertness; effects vary between medicines. A rash after a new medicine, food, or supplement should be assessed rather than repeatedly masked.

Read the active ingredients and follow the label or pharmacist's directions. Do not combine products with the same ingredient or add a sedating medicine before driving, working at height, or drinking alcohol. Ask a pharmacist or clinician first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, treating a child, older, or taking regular medicines. Use fragrance-free moisturiser and cool compresses alongside medicine when dryness is contributing. Keep a note of the product, dose, timing, response, and any unwanted effect.

Seek emergency care for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, faintness, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; allergy medicine is not a substitute for emergency treatment. Arrange a clinical review if itching persists, returns frequently, has a spreading or painful rash, produces blisters or sores, or began after a prescription medicine. A clinician can identify the cause and select treatment for the specific pattern.
