Itching All Over the Body in Pregnancy: What to Know

Pregnancy can make skin drier and more sensitive as the body changes. Stretching skin, heat, sweat, soaps, and new fabrics may cause irritation. A rash may point toward a pregnancy-related skin condition, while itching without much of a rash can sometimes be linked to a liver problem called intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. It may be felt on the hands or feet and can be worse at night. Itching itself does not identify a cancer; the pattern, examination, and pregnancy history guide the assessment.

Contact your maternity team or clinician about new widespread itching, especially if it disturbs sleep or affects your palms or soles. They may examine your skin and arrange blood tests that assess liver function and bile acids. Until you are assessed, use fragrance-free moisturiser, choose loose cotton clothing, keep showers lukewarm, and avoid scratching when possible. Do not start an anti-itch medicine or herbal product without checking that it is suitable during pregnancy.

Seek urgent maternity advice if itching comes with yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, marked right-upper-abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement. A clinician should also review a widespread rash with facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fever, blistering, or skin peeling. These signs can have causes unrelated to itching alone, so describe when they began and any products or medicines used.

Ask whether your symptoms fit a pregnancy-related liver condition, whether liver and bile-acid testing is needed, and how results will be followed. Ask which moisturisers or medicines are suitable, what fetal monitoring is appropriate, and which symptoms should prompt same-day contact.
