What should you know about itching all over body when pregnant?

Pregnancy can make skin drier, warmer, and more sensitive; stretching over the abdomen can add local itch. Eczema and other pregnancy-related rashes usually cause visible changes. A strong itch without a rash, especially on the palms or soles or at night, can point to a liver-related pregnancy condition, so clinicians may arrange blood tests and follow-up. Hodgkin Lymphoma can present with itching, but pregnancy-related itch does not mean a person has that cancer. Vulvar Cancer concerns persistent symptoms confined to the vulvar area, rather than generalized pregnancy itch.

Tell your obstetrician, midwife, or maternity clinic about widespread itching rather than treating it only at home. Use fragrance-free emollient, short lukewarm showers, loose cotton clothing, and a cool compress. Check before using medicines, essential oils, or herbal preparations because pregnancy changes what is suitable. Note the onset, worst body areas, presence of rash, sleep disruption, urine or stool changes, and fetal movement.

Contact your maternity team promptly for severe or persistent itch, itch without a rash, or symptoms focused on the palms or soles. Get urgent help for reduced fetal movement, jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, bleeding, or significant abdominal pain. Follow the local maternity service instructions if you cannot reach your usual clinician.
