What should you know about itching all over body at night?

Warm bedding, sweating, dry air, and reduced distraction can make an itch feel stronger after dark. Eczema, contact irritation, scabies, allergies, and some medicines can also cause widespread itching. Less commonly, itching without an obvious skin change can accompany liver, kidney, thyroid, blood, or immune problems. Itching is a presentation of Hodgkin Lymphoma, but itching alone does not establish that diagnosis. Vulvar Cancer can cause localized vulvar itching, especially when there is a persistent skin change, soreness, bleeding, or a lump.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser after a lukewarm shower, keep the bedroom comfortably cool, and choose loose cotton sleepwear. Avoid new soaps, scented laundry products, and vigorous scratching; short nails and a cool compress can reduce skin damage. Note where the itch occurs, whether a rash appears, recent products or medicines, and whether anyone sharing your home is itchy. A clinician can examine your skin and decide whether blood tests or a medicine review would help.

Arrange medical care if itching is widespread, repeatedly interrupts sleep, lasts beyond a brief irritation, or occurs without a visible rash. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, breathing difficulty, faintness, a rapidly spreading blistering rash, yellow skin, dark urine, or severe weakness. These features need prompt evaluation rather than home treatment alone.
