What should you know about itching after dengue?

A recovering rash can become itchy as inflammation settles and the skin barrier repairs. Dryness, heat, sweating, medicines, or a product used during illness can add irritation. The timing alone cannot confirm that dengue is the cause, particularly if the rash is new or the fever has returned.

Describe whether the itch is all over or limited to one area, and whether there are hives, scaling, blisters, bruising, or peeling. A skin condition such as contact dermatitis, eczema, hives, psoriasis, a yeast infection, lichen planus, or scabies may need separate evaluation.

Keep the room cool, wear loose soft clothing, and use lukewarm rather than hot water. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser to dry intact skin and pat rather than rub after washing. Keep fingernails short to reduce skin damage if you scratch in your sleep.

Do not start medicines for itch without checking with a clinician, especially while recovering from dengue or taking other medicines. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen unless a clinician specifically advises them during dengue recovery; ask what pain or itch options fit your situation.

Contact a clinician promptly if itching is severe, spreading, or accompanied by renewed fever, unusual bruising, bleeding, marked weakness, persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, or reduced urine. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, confusion, fainting, or bleeding that does not stop.

Share the date dengue symptoms began, when the itch started, any medicines or creams used, and photographs of changing skin findings. Ask whether blood tests or a skin examination is needed, which moisturiser or antihistamine is appropriate, and which warning signs should take you back to urgent care.
