What should you know about itching after blepharoplasty?

Tightness, flaking, or a mild itch can reflect healing skin, surface dryness, or sensitivity to cleanser, ointment, tape, or adhesive. Swelling can make the eyelids feel irritated even when the incision is settling. Itching alone does not show whether healing is progressing normally, so consider its direction and accompanying findings.

Increasing redness, warmth, tenderness, drainage, wound separation, or a rash beyond the treated area can signal irritation or infection. A gritty feeling may come from dry eyes, while marked eye pain or blurred vision requires quicker attention.

Follow the operating surgeon's instructions for cleaning and prescribed drops or ointments. Do not scratch, rub, peel crusts, or pull at sutures. Keep hands clean before touching the area, avoid eye makeup until cleared, and protect the eyelids from smoke, dust, and direct sun.

Use only products your surgical team has approved around the eyes. A cool, clean compress may soothe swelling when the surgeon permits it; do not press on the incision or place ice directly on skin. Record when itching occurs and whether a new product preceded it.

Contact the surgical team promptly for worsening itch with spreading redness, increasing swelling, pus-like discharge, fever, or an opening incision. Seek urgent medical help for sudden vision change, severe eye pain, inability to close the eye, heavy bleeding, or swelling that rapidly affects sight.

Show the exact area that itches and ask whether the incision, eyelid surface, or a product reaction is most likely. Confirm when rubbing, makeup, contact lenses, exercise, and sun exposure are safe for you.
