Tell the maternity service early so it can discuss who may be available for antenatal visits, labour, examinations, and birth. A planned care team may include several clinicians because labour can begin unexpectedly, staff work in shifts, and the clinician on duty may need to respond quickly.

The mode of birth is decided from clinical factors such as the baby's position, the progress of labour, the placenta, previous operations, and your health. A female clinician preference does not itself make vaginal delivery unsafe. If a complication develops, immediate treatment may require the available qualified clinician, regardless of gender.

How to prepare

Discuss your preference at the first maternity appointment and record it in your birth plan. Contact your maternity unit promptly for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe or constant abdominal pain, leaking fluid, reduced fetal movement, regular painful contractions, or a severe headache with visual changes. During labour, tell the team immediately about worsening pain between contractions, faintness, breathing difficulty, or a strong concern that something is changing.

These symptoms need assessment because they can affect you or the baby; the need for timely evaluation takes priority over waiting for a particular clinician.
