Is vaginal delivery needed before lactation consultation?

A lactation consultation can help with feeding plans, breast or nipple discomfort, positioning, attachment, expressing milk, choosing feeding equipment and understanding a baby's feeding behaviour. It may be useful before birth, after a vaginal birth, after a caesarean birth, or when feeding changes later. The consultant can consider the birth experience, the baby's gestational age and health, your recovery, medicines and your goals. You do not need to wait until a feeding problem becomes severe, and seeking advice does not commit you to one feeding method.

You can book a consultation during pregnancy to discuss preparation, hand expression, colostrum and what to expect in the first days. After birth, ask for help if the baby is difficult to attach, feeds for unusually long periods, has few wet nappies, or you have nipple pain, breast fullness or concern about milk transfer. Contact your maternity or newborn team promptly if the baby is very sleepy and difficult to wake for feeds, has breathing difficulty, appears dehydrated or is not feeding effectively. Seek care for you if you have fever with a red, hot, painful area of the breast, severe pain, faintness or heavy bleeding after birth. A lactation consultant can support feeding technique, but urgent symptoms in you or the baby need medical assessment as well.
