Is trichoscopy done with trichoscope?

A trichoscope is a handheld or connected imaging device with magnification and light. During trichoscopy, a clinician examines selected scalp areas and compares findings across the hairline, crown, parting, or other regions. The images may show shaft thickness, broken hairs, follicle openings, scaling, redness, crusting, and patterns of regrowth.

Some devices use contact with a fluid interface; others allow a non-contact view. The examination does not remove hair or require a biopsy. Its findings are interpreted alongside your history, scalp examination, and sometimes laboratory tests or a biopsy when the diagnosis remains unclear.

Ask whether you should arrive with clean, product-free hair. Tell the clinician about recent colouring, oils, fibres, extensions, treatments, shedding, itching, or tenderness, since these can affect what is visible. Bring a list of medicines and supplements and mention recent illness or major changes in health.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for sudden patchy loss, rapidly increasing shedding, scalp pain, pus, marked redness, bleeding, or smooth shiny areas. Trichoscopy can support the assessment, but urgent symptoms should not wait for a routine imaging appointment.

Ask what pattern the images suggest, whether photographs will be used for follow-up, if you need tests beyond trichoscopy, and which changes should prompt an earlier review. Ask whether washing or styling products need to be avoided before the appointment.
