A total hip replacement uses a ball and socket made from several components. Highly cross-linked polyethylene is a specially processed plastic that may form the socket liner, often paired with a metal or ceramic ball. Its purpose is to provide a smooth bearing surface while the implant is fixed to bone by a cemented or uncemented method. The bearing is only one part of the reconstruction. Bone quality, anatomy, activity, previous surgery, and the surgeon’s implant system all influence the selection.

Ask your surgeon whether highly cross-linked polyethylene is planned, which ball material will meet it, and how the components will be fixed. Discuss the activities you hope to return to, movement precautions, weight-bearing instructions, and physiotherapy. If you have had a previous hip operation, mention its details because they can affect component choice and positioning.

Tell the surgical team about increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or new swelling. Seek urgent care for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, new leg weakness, a cold or pale foot, or an abrupt painful inability to move the hip. The bearing material does not change the need to assess these warning signs.
