Are threadworms safe in children?

Threadworms, also called pinworms, are small worms that live in the bowel. Children may have itching around the anus, especially at night, disturbed sleep, or visible thread-like worms around the bottom. Some children have few or no symptoms.

The infection spreads when microscopic eggs reach the mouth from hands, fingernails, clothing, bedding, or shared surfaces. Scratching can move eggs onto the fingers and make reinfection more likely. Threadworms are unpleasant but are generally not dangerous when managed appropriately.

Speak with a pharmacist or clinician before giving treatment, particularly to a very young child, a child who is unwell, or a child with another medical condition. Follow the product directions exactly and ask whether household members need advice.

Reduce spread by washing hands after toileting and before eating, keeping fingernails short, bathing or showering regularly, changing underwear, and washing sleepwear and bedding. Avoid shaking bedding. Cleaning routines matter because medicine may remove worms without removing eggs from the environment.

Arrange medical advice if itching continues after treatment, keeps returning, or is causing significant sleep loss. Seek care for severe abdominal pain, vomiting, blood in the stool, marked weight loss, or irritation that looks infected. A clinician can check whether threadworms are the right explanation.

Ask which treatment is suitable for your child's age, whether a repeat dose is needed, and how to manage close household contacts. Ask when the child can return to nursery or school and which symptoms would need reassessment.
