Is there a test for long COVID?

Long COVID describes symptoms that continue or develop after COVID-19 and affect daily life. Symptoms can include fatigue, difficulty concentrating, joint pain, changes in smell or taste, and low mood. They may vary from day to day and can involve more than one body system.

A clinician may review your original illness, symptom pattern, medicines, sleep, activity, and existing conditions. Blood tests, heart or lung checks, or other investigations may be offered when they could identify another explanation or guide care. A normal test does not by itself rule out long COVID.

Keep a brief diary of symptoms, activity, sleep, and recovery time. Note when symptoms began, whether you had confirmed or suspected COVID-19, and how work, study, exercise, or personal care has changed. Bring a medicine list and any relevant medical results.

Use a gradual, flexible approach to activity and rest rather than pushing through a marked symptom flare. A clinician can help plan support for fatigue, concentration, mood, breathing, or pain according to your pattern.

Arrange an appointment if symptoms persist, return repeatedly, or interfere with normal activities. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, new chest pain, fainting, sudden weakness, confusion, or thoughts of self-harm. These symptoms need prompt assessment even if they began after COVID-19.

Ask which tests are useful for your symptoms, what other conditions should be considered, and how results will change your care. Ask for a written plan covering activity, follow-up, work or study adjustments, and warning signs.
