Is tetanus vaccination done with inactivated vaccine?

Short answer

Yes, tetanus vaccination is made with an inactivated, non-live form of the tetanus toxin component.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What inactivated means

The vaccine does not contain live tetanus bacteria. It uses a treated toxin component, called a toxoid, so the immune system can practise recognising the harmful toxin without causing tetanus. Protection develops through the body's immune response, and booster doses may be advised because protection can change over time.

Tetanus is associated with bacteria that can enter through breaks in the skin, including contaminated wounds. Vaccination reduces the chance of illness but does not replace wound cleaning or a clinical assessment after an injury.

What to do

Keep a record of your routine vaccinations and ask a clinician whether a booster is due, especially after a deep, dirty, or puncture wound. Wash an injury with clean running water, remove visible dirt gently, and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not delay medical advice while trying to check your vaccination history.

Tell the clinician about allergies, pregnancy, immune problems, and any previous reaction to a vaccine. A wound assessment may determine whether vaccination or another protective treatment is appropriate.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical care for a deep or contaminated wound, a bite, a puncture, a burn, or an injury with damaged tissue when your vaccination history is incomplete or uncertain. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, severe swelling, fainting, or other signs of a serious allergic reaction after vaccination. Muscle stiffness, difficulty swallowing, or painful muscle spasms need urgent assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which tetanus-containing vaccine is suitable, whether your wound changes the timing, and what to do if your vaccination record is missing. You can also ask about expected injection-site symptoms and when to seek help for a reaction.

Questions people ask

Can an inactivated tetanus vaccine cause tetanus?

It cannot cause tetanus because it does not contain live tetanus bacteria.

Do I need a tetanus dose after every wound?

Not necessarily. The decision depends on the wound and your vaccination history, so a clinician should assess uncertain or high-risk injuries.
