Is TENS therapy done with a TENS unit?

A TENS unit is a small device connected to adhesive electrode pads. A clinician or trained user places the pads on intact skin near the painful area, then selects settings suited to the treatment plan. The signals may create tingling or a pulsing feeling; they should not feel sharply painful. TENS may be used alongside movement work, physiotherapy, or other pain-management measures. It does not repair every underlying cause of pain, so the reason for your symptoms still matters.

Follow the instructions for pad placement, session length, and intensity. Check the skin before and after use, keep electrodes clean, and stop if you develop burning, a rash, or worsening pain. Do not place pads over broken skin, the front of the neck, or across the chest unless a qualified clinician has specifically directed you. Ask about use if you have an implanted electrical device, reduced sensation, or are pregnant.

Seek prompt medical care for new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs, severe injury-related pain, or chest symptoms. Arrange a clinical review when pain is persistent, spreading, associated with fever or swelling, or changing despite the treatment plan. A TENS unit should not delay assessment of a new or unexplained problem.

Ask where the electrodes belong for your diagnosis, which settings and session pattern are appropriate, and what changes mean you should stop. You can also ask whether TENS fits with your medicines, exercises, skin condition, or implanted device.
