Is sunburn safe in outdoor workers?

Sunburn is an inflammatory response to ultraviolet exposure. Redness, warmth, tenderness, peeling, and blistering can develop after the workday, even when heat or cloud makes exposure feel less intense. Repeated burns add to long-term skin damage and can worsen uneven pigmentation, premature skin ageing, and the chance of developing skin cancers.

Use shade, covered breaks, a broad-brimmed hat, tightly woven clothing, and sunglasses where practical. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to exposed skin and reapply according to its label, especially after sweating. Clothing and shade are useful because sunscreen can miss areas and may be removed during work. Employers and workers should plan the workday around shade and protective equipment.

Get urgent medical help for widespread blistering, severe pain, confusion, fainting, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, or signs of heat illness. Seek clinical advice for a burn involving the eyes or face, a large area, or a person who is very young, older, or medically vulnerable. Do not break blisters; cool the skin gently and avoid ice directly on it.

Ask how deep or extensive the burn appears, which pain-relief and moisturising products suit you, when you can safely return to direct sun, and how to check changing or persistent spots on exposed skin.
