Is stoma surgery done with a stoma appliance?

During stoma surgery, part of the bowel is brought through an opening in the abdominal wall to form a stoma. Depending on whether it is a colostomy or ileostomy, stool or liquid output leaves through the stoma rather than the usual route. Because a stoma has no muscle to control flow, a pouching system is placed over the surrounding skin to collect output.

A nurse or stoma-care specialist usually helps choose the pouch, measure the stoma, protect the skin, and empty or change the appliance. The stoma can change in size as swelling settles, so the fit may need adjustment during recovery. Some stomas are temporary and others are intended to remain, according to the surgical plan.

Before discharge, practise emptying the pouch and changing the skin barrier with the stoma-care team. Learn how to check the seal, clean the surrounding skin gently, and record changes in output. Keep spare supplies available and ask how to bathe, dress, travel, and manage odour. Report leaks early because repeated contact with output can irritate the skin.

Ask whether your medicines, diet, or fluid intake need adjustment. Ileostomy output can be more liquid, so your team may give specific hydration and monitoring advice.

Contact the surgical or stoma team if output stops or changes sharply, the stoma becomes increasingly swollen or dark, the surrounding skin breaks down, or you have persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, or dizziness. Seek urgent help for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, or signs of dehydration. Follow the individual instructions given at discharge.
