Is sperm freezing done with vitrification?

Sperm cryopreservation involves preparing a semen sample, mixing it with a protective solution, dividing it into labelled containers, and storing it at very low temperature. Controlled-rate freezing lowers the temperature in stages before long-term storage. Vitrification cools a sample very rapidly and is designed to limit ice-crystal formation. The method chosen depends on the sample, the laboratory protocol, and whether sperm are stored in semen or handled as individual cells.

The freezing method does not replace assessment of sperm count, movement, and shape. A fertility team can explain whether the laboratory has experience with vitrification for sperm and whether that approach is appropriate for the planned use.

Ask how many samples the team recommends, how each sample will be labelled, and how long storage can continue under the clinic’s policy. Tell the team about medicines, infections, or difficulty producing a sample. If a procedure is planned to collect sperm directly, ask how the sample will be prepared and frozen afterward. Request a clear explanation of thawing, because the laboratory method used for warming is part of the overall process.

Contact the fertility team promptly if you cannot provide a planned sample, develop fever or significant genital pain, or notice swelling after a collection procedure. Urgent medical assessment is appropriate for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, or trouble passing urine after an invasive procedure.
