Is shoulder arthroscopy done with an arthroscope?

An arthroscope is a narrow instrument with a camera and light. During shoulder arthroscopy, it passes through a portal into the joint and sends images to a monitor. The surgeon may inspect cartilage, the labrum, rotator cuff, ligaments, and the joint lining. Other portals allow specialised instruments to remove damaged tissue, repair structures, or address inflammation. The camera provides a view, but the procedure also depends on the planned repair and the surgeon’s assessment.

Discuss the suspected shoulder problem, the intended procedure, anaesthesia, sling use, and rehabilitation timeline before surgery. Tell the surgical team about medicines, allergies, medical conditions, and previous shoulder operations. Arrange help for tasks that require two arms during early recovery. Follow wound, sling, and exercise instructions carefully; early rehabilitation often protects the repair while restoring movement in stages.

After surgery, contact the team for increasing redness, drainage, fever, uncontrolled pain, or a wound that opens. Urgent assessment is needed for a cold or pale hand, new severe numbness or weakness, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or a shoulder that suddenly appears deformed. Do not remove a prescribed sling or start forceful exercises to test the repair.

Ask what the arthroscope is expected to show, which repair or treatment may be performed through the other portals, and what findings could change the plan. Clarify sling duration, driving, work, sleep positions, physiotherapy milestones, and symptoms that should prompt a call.
