Are shin splints safe in runners?

Short answer
Shin splints may be manageable for runners when pain is mild and improves with rest, but worsening or persistent pain needs assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What shin splints mean
Shin splints, also called medial tibial stress syndrome, describe exercise-related pain along the inner edge of the shin. Repeated loading can irritate tissues around the shin bone, especially after increasing distance, speed, hills, or training frequency. Runners may feel a broad tender area rather than one sharply defined spot. The condition is not a reason to ignore pain: similar symptoms can occur with a bone stress injury or another problem.
What to do now
Reduce or pause the activity that brings on pain, and use lower-impact exercise only if it remains comfortable during and after the session. Check recent changes in footwear, running surface, hills, and training volume. Gradually return when everyday walking is comfortable and symptoms are settling, increasing one training factor at a time. A physiotherapist can review running load, calf strength, ankle movement, and technique, then plan a staged return.
When to seek care
Arrange clinical assessment if pain is focused in one small spot, occurs at rest or at night, causes limping, or keeps returning despite reducing training. Seek prompt care after a sudden injury, inability to bear weight, marked swelling, numbness, or unusual weakness. These features need more than a simple training adjustment and may require examination or imaging.
Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist
Ask which activities are safe while the shin settles, how to distinguish shin splints from a bone stress injury, and what signs should guide your return to running. You can also ask for a gradual training plan and advice on footwear, surfaces, calf conditioning, and recovery between sessions.

Questions people ask
Can I run with shin splints?
If running causes pain, reduce or pause it and choose comfortable low-impact movement while symptoms settle. Return gradually when walking is comfortable.
Are shin splints the same as a stress fracture?
No. They can feel similar, so focused pain, pain at rest or night, limping, or persistent symptoms warrant a clinical assessment.
