Is sever's disease safe in children?

Short answer
Sever's disease is usually manageable in children, but heel pain should be assessed and activity adjusted to protect comfort and movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Location
- Pain comes from the developing growth area at the back of the heel.
- Activity
- Running and jumping may aggravate symptoms during growth.
Why the heel hurts
Sever's disease, also called calcaneal apophysitis, affects the growth area at the back of the heel. Repeated pulling from the Achilles tendon and pressure from running or jumping can irritate this area while the heel is developing. Pain commonly appears during or after activity and may ease with rest.
It is not usually a dangerous condition, but the child may limp or avoid play when symptoms flare. Symptoms can return during periods of growth or heavy activity. A clinician may examine the heel, ankle, calf, walking pattern, and footwear to rule out another cause of pain.
Helping a child recover
Reduce or pause the activities that trigger heel pain, while allowing comfortable movement. Supportive shoes, heel cups, gentle calf stretching, and a gradual return to sport may help when recommended. Use pain medicine only as directed for the child's age and health, and do not push through a limp. Keep track of which activities bring symptoms back.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical assessment if pain persists despite reduced activity, interferes with walking or sleep, follows an injury, or is accompanied by swelling, redness, fever, or pain in several joints. Seek urgent care if the child cannot bear weight, has marked swelling, or develops severe pain suddenly.
Questions for your doctor
Does the examination fit Sever's disease, or is another cause possible? Which activities are safe now? Should the child use heel cups, stretching, physiotherapy, or a temporary break from sport?

Questions people ask
Can a child keep playing with Sever's disease?
Comfortable activity may be possible, but painful sport, limping, and pushing through symptoms should be avoided.
Does Sever's disease affect adult growth?
It occurs in a developing heel and is generally linked to growth; persistent or unusual pain still needs assessment.
