Is scabies treatment done with permethrin?

Permethrin is a topical medicine designed to kill scabies mites. Treatment can fail when areas are missed, the cream is removed too soon, or close contacts remain untreated and pass mites back to one another. Your clinician or pharmacist should explain which body areas to cover because instructions can differ for young children and adults. Skin irritation or itching may continue for a while after successful treatment and does not by itself prove that live mites remain.

Use the product exactly as directed, applying it to clean, dry skin and covering the specified areas, including commonly missed folds or spaces when instructed. Keep it away from the eyes and inside the mouth. Wash it off at the recommended time, change into clean clothes, and repeat the application only according to the treatment plan. Wash or isolate recently used bedding, towels, and clothes, and ask which household members or close contacts should be treated.

Contact a clinician if fresh burrows or new bumps appear after the planned treatment, if symptoms return after improving, or if the medicine causes marked burning or swelling. Seek prompt care for pus, increasing pain, spreading redness, fever, or extensive crusting. A rash that does not resemble scabies should be assessed before more cream is applied.
