Is scabies treatment done with ivermectin?

Ivermectin is an oral medicine that can target the mites responsible for scabies. It is not appropriate for everyone, and the choice between an oral medicine and a treatment applied to the skin depends on the person being treated, the severity of the infestation, and practical factors such as whether the whole household can follow the plan. Itching can continue after the mites have been cleared because the skin may remain irritated. New burrows or fresh bumps suggest that treatment needs review, especially when close contacts were not treated at the same time.

Have a clinician confirm the diagnosis and prescribe the correct ivermectin schedule if it is chosen. Tell them about pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver problems, other medicines, and the ages and weights of children in the household. Treat close household contacts as advised, wash recently used clothing and bedding, and avoid sharing towels or clothing until the plan is complete. Do not take someone else’s tablets or add extra doses because itching has not settled.

Arrange a review if new tracks, bumps, or blisters appear after treatment, if itching is severe enough to disturb sleep, or if several people at home develop symptoms. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or painful crusting, which can indicate a bacterial infection from scratching. A person with a weakened immune system or widespread thick crusting needs medical assessment rather than self-treatment.
