Is rotator cuff repair done with suture anchor?

A suture anchor is a small device placed in the bone near the tendon’s normal attachment. Strong threads attached to the anchor pass through the torn tendon, allowing the surgeon to bring the tendon back to its footprint and tie or configure the sutures.

The anchor may be made from a material that remains in the body or one designed to change over time. The number and arrangement of anchors vary with tear shape, tendon quality, bone strength and the repair technique. The anchor supports the repair; healing still requires the tendon and bone to unite.

Use the sling and perform only the exercises prescribed for your stage. Early rehabilitation may focus on hand, wrist and elbow movement while the shoulder repair is protected, followed by carefully guided shoulder motion and later strengthening.

Avoid lifting, pushing yourself up from a chair, sudden reaching and sleeping positions that strain the shoulder until cleared. Ask for the implant name and operative summary so future clinicians know what was used.

Report worsening wound redness, drainage, fever, severe unrelieved pain, new hand weakness or numbness, or a fall that pulls the operated arm. Chest pain, sudden breathlessness or a cold, blue hand requires emergency attention.

Ask whether an anchor is planned, where it will be placed, whether it is intended to remain or change over time, how the tendon is protected, and which rehabilitation movements are safe at each stage.
