Is robotic knee replacement done with a robotic surgical system?

Before surgery, the team uses imaging and an assessment of the knee to create a plan. During the operation, the system can provide navigation, boundaries or positioning guidance for selected bone cuts and implant alignment. The surgeon performs the operation, checks the knee and makes clinical decisions throughout.

The technology does not mean a machine operates independently. It also does not make every patient suitable for robotic assistance; the knee’s deformity, prior operations, implant choice and the available equipment all matter.

Ask whether your knee replacement is planned with robotic assistance and what the system will add in your case. Review imaging, implant options, anaesthesia, expected mobility and physiotherapy. Arrange help at home, prepare a safe walking route and follow instructions about medicines, skin care and fasting before the operation.

After surgery, contact the team for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, calf swelling or a sudden change in knee movement. Emergency care is needed for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting or a cold, pale foot. A new inability to bear weight should be assessed promptly.

Ask who controls the system, how your plan is built, what happens if the technology cannot be used, and which implant will be placed. Clarify the walking plan, wound review, exercises and warning signs after discharge.
