Is revision joint replacement done with a bone graft substitute?

Revision surgery is performed when an earlier joint replacement needs to be removed, repaired or replaced. The first implant, wear, loosening or infection can leave gaps in the surrounding bone. A graft substitute may be placed in a selected defect to provide structure while the area heals or to help support a new component.

The choice depends on the size and location of the defect, bone quality, infection assessment, joint stability and the planned implant. A substitute is different from donor bone, and it may be used alone or alongside other reconstruction materials.

Ask the surgical team what has caused the bone loss and whether infection has been ruled out. Share previous implant records, medication details and any history of poor wound healing. Before discharge, confirm weight-bearing limits, wound care, walking aids and physiotherapy exercises. Follow the restriction on twisting, bending or loading the joint because it protects the reconstruction while it settles.

Call the surgical team for increasing pain, wound drainage, spreading redness, fever, new clicking or a change in limb alignment. Urgent assessment is needed for sudden inability to use the limb, severe swelling, chest pain, breathlessness or fainting. A painful joint with fever before planned revision also needs prompt medical review.

Ask which defect needs support, why a substitute is preferred, what material will be used, and how the new implant will be secured. Discuss alternatives, the expected protection period, follow-up imaging and the rehabilitation plan.
