A revision operation replaces or repairs components from an earlier joint replacement. Bone may have been lost around the old implant, making a standard component difficult to position securely. A 3D-printed implant can be designed from scans to match an unusual defect and support reconstruction. It is a treatment option, not an automatic part of every revision.

The surgeon also considers the joint involved, bone quality, soft-tissue stability, infection status and the condition of the existing components. The printed part may be combined with other implants or fixation methods.

Bring prior operation reports and implant details if you have them. Your team may arrange detailed imaging and blood tests, and may investigate infection before selecting an implant. Discuss medicines, dental problems, smoking, mobility at home and the rehabilitation plan. After revision surgery, contact the surgical team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, new instability or a sudden loss of movement. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting or a painful swollen calf. Before surgery, rapidly worsening joint pain with fever or inability to bear weight also needs prompt assessment.

Ask which bone defect the implant is intended to address, whether it will be custom-designed, how it will be fixed, and what alternatives are available. Clarify the expected hospital stay, restrictions, physiotherapy milestones and signs that should trigger a call.
