Is radiofrequency ablation done with a radiofrequency generator?

The generator produces and regulates radiofrequency energy. During the procedure, the clinician guides a thin electrode to the planned treatment area, often using imaging to confirm its position. The generator then sends energy through the electrode to heat a small section of nerve tissue associated with pain signals. The device allows the team to control the treatment settings and monitor the process. It is not the same as a household radio device, and the electrode does not deliver energy throughout your whole body.

Radiofrequency ablation may be considered for selected pain arising from spinal joints or other targeted nerves. Suitability depends on your examination, symptoms, previous treatments, and any diagnostic injections or tests recommended by your clinician.

Tell the clinic about medicines, allergies, pregnancy, implanted electrical devices, and any infection or illness. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, and arranging transport. After treatment, follow activity advice; temporary soreness or altered sensation near the treatment area can occur. Do not change pain medicines or drive until the treating team says it is appropriate.

Contact the treating service promptly for worsening weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, spreading numbness, fever, increasing redness or drainage at the needle site, or pain that is severe and not settling. Seek urgent care for sudden major weakness, trouble breathing, fainting, or another rapidly worsening symptom.

Ask which nerve is being targeted, how the generator and electrode will be used, what benefit is realistic for your pain pattern, which medicines need special instructions, and how soon normal activity can resume.
