Is PRP injection done with platelet-rich plasma?

PRP means platelet-rich plasma. During the procedure, a clinician takes a blood sample, processes it to separate plasma and platelets from other blood components, and prepares the selected portion for injection. The clinician then places it at a planned treatment site, such as a tendon, joint or other soft-tissue area, based on the diagnosis. The preparation is not a generic medicine and formulations can differ between clinics, so the contents and intended target should be explained before treatment.

Tell the clinician about blood disorders, medicines that affect clotting, infection near the injection site, allergies, pregnancy or other relevant health conditions. Ask whether any medicine or supplement should be changed; do not stop prescribed treatment without medical direction. Afterward, follow instructions about activity, wound care, bathing and rehabilitation. Temporary soreness can occur, and the treated area may need a gradual return to loading rather than immediate strenuous exercise.

Contact the treating clinic if pain or swelling is steadily worsening, the site becomes increasingly red or warm, or drainage develops. Seek urgent help for severe allergic symptoms, fainting, chest pain, breathlessness, or rapidly spreading swelling. A review is also appropriate if the planned improvement does not occur or the original problem keeps limiting movement.
