Is progestogen-only pill done with levonorgestrel?

A progestogen-only pill, sometimes called the mini pill, contains a progestogen without oestrogen. Levonorgestrel is one possible progestogen, but it is not the ingredient in every product. Other formulations may use a different progestogen and may have different instructions for missed tablets, starting the pack and handling vomiting or diarrhoea. The pack name and ingredient list are more reliable than the general term mini pill.

Read the active-ingredient line on the package or medicine leaflet and compare it with the prescription. If the wording is unclear, ask a pharmacist before changing brands, skipping tablets or taking an extra dose. Take the pill according to its specific schedule, because the acceptable delay can differ between formulations. Tell the clinician about other medicines and supplements, since some can reduce contraceptive protection.

Contact a pharmacist or clinician promptly if the pack is missing, the ingredient cannot be identified, tablets were missed, or unprotected sex occurred after a dosing problem. Seek urgent care for severe lower abdominal pain, fainting, heavy bleeding or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction. A late or absent period can have several causes; take a pregnancy test and seek advice if pregnancy is possible.
