Is PGT-A done with next-generation sequencing?

Short answer

PGT-A can be performed using next-generation sequencing to examine chromosome material from an embryo biopsy.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Test purpose
Assesses embryo chromosome number.
Sample
Cells collected during an embryo biopsy.
Method
May include next-generation sequencing.

What this means

PGT-A, or preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy, assesses whether an embryo has the expected chromosome number. A fertility laboratory takes a small sample of cells from an embryo and sends the material for genetic analysis. Next-generation sequencing reads many DNA fragments at the same time and helps the laboratory identify chromosome gains or losses. The embryo itself is not sequenced as a whole person, and the test does not diagnose every genetic or developmental condition.

The laboratory method and reporting approach can differ. Results describe the cells sampled, so your team interprets them alongside embryo development, your reproductive history, and other testing options.

What to do next

Ask the fertility specialist which laboratory method will be used, what the report can and cannot show, and how a result may affect embryo selection. Confirm how the biopsy, sample transport, result discussion, and transfer planning fit together. Genetic counselling can help you understand findings such as aneuploid, euploid, or mosaic results before making a decision.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt clinical advice if you have significant bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fever, fainting, or breathing difficulty after an egg-collection or embryo-transfer procedure. Contact the fertility team when a result is unclear or when you are unsure whether a planned transfer should proceed; do not change medicines on your own.

Questions for your doctor

Which test is being used for my embryos, and why? What chromosome findings will the report cover? How will mosaic or inconclusive results be handled? When will we review the result with a fertility specialist or genetic counsellor?

Questions people ask

Does PGT-A test for every genetic condition?

No. It focuses on chromosome-number changes and does not replace testing for every inherited condition.

Who explains a PGT-A result?

Your fertility specialist and, when appropriate, a genetic counsellor can explain the finding and its limits.
