Is a PET-CT scan done with an FDG radiotracer?

FDG is a glucose-like substance linked to a small amount of radioactive material. After it is given, areas that use more glucose may take up more FDG. The PET part detects this distribution, while the CT part shows body structures and helps locate findings. The combined images can support diagnosis, staging, treatment planning, or assessment of a known condition.

FDG uptake is not specific to cancer. Infection, inflammation, recent surgery, muscle activity, and normal organs can also affect the scan. A radiologist interprets the images with your history, examination, laboratory results, and any previous scans.

Follow the imaging centre’s instructions about eating, drinking, diabetes medicines, and strenuous activity. Tell the team if you have diabetes, are pregnant or could be pregnant, are breastfeeding, or recently had surgery or an infection. Wear comfortable clothing and allow time to rest quietly after the tracer is given. Ask before taking any medicine on the morning of the scan if the instructions are unclear.

Tell staff immediately if you develop itching, swelling, wheezing, dizziness, or feel unwell after the injection. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fainting, or chest pain. Most concerns after imaging are managed by the scan team, but symptoms that appear later should still be reported to the centre or your treating clinician.
