Is PARP inhibitor therapy done with PARP inhibitor drugs?

PARP inhibitor drugs block proteins that help cells repair damaged DNA. Some cancer cells already have weaknesses in DNA-repair pathways, so blocking PARP can make it harder for those cells to recover. The treatment may be used in specific cancers and situations, often after the oncology team reviews the cancer type, previous treatment, general health, and molecular or inherited test results.

The word therapy describes the treatment approach; the drug is the medicine delivered as part of that approach. A prescription may be taken by mouth on a schedule set by the oncology team. Different PARP inhibitors are not interchangeable, and the right choice depends on clinical details and other medicines.

Take each dose exactly as prescribed and keep a record of doses and symptoms. Tell the team about all medicines, supplements, and kidney or liver problems before starting. Common concerns can include tiredness, nausea, reduced appetite, changes in blood counts, or headache. Do not stop treatment or restart it after a missed dose without instructions.
