Is oral antifungal treatment done with terbinafine?

Terbinafine is an antifungal medicine taken by mouth. It is used for selected fungal infections, including some infections affecting the nails or skin. It is not the right tablet for every rash, and some fungal problems are better treated with a cream or another medicine. The diagnosis matters because eczema, psoriasis, irritation, and bacterial infections can look similar to fungus.

Before prescribing tablets, a clinician may ask about your symptoms, examine the affected area, and review other medicines and health conditions. Oral treatment acts throughout the body, so it has different considerations from a medicine applied to the skin.

Use terbinafine only as prescribed, and follow the dose and treatment length given to you. Tell the prescriber about liver problems, regular medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any previous reaction to antifungal treatment. Do not share tablets or restart an old course for a new rash. Keep the affected skin clean and dry, and attend any recommended review so the diagnosis and response can be checked.

Contact a clinician promptly if you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusually dark urine, marked nausea, persistent abdominal discomfort, or severe tiredness while taking terbinafine. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash. If the infection is worsening or not improving as expected, arrange a review rather than extending treatment yourself.
