Is nerve root block done with local anaesthetic?

Local anaesthetic temporarily reduces nerve signalling near the injection site. This can make the area numb for a limited period and may help the clinician judge whether the targeted nerve contributes to your pain. Tell the team about allergies, previous reactions to anaesthetic, pregnancy, infection, diabetes, and medicines that affect bleeding. Ask whether you need to change any medicine or arrange someone to take you home. After the injection, protect a numb limb from heat, pressure and falls until sensation returns. Follow the team’s instructions about driving, work and exercise, because temporary weakness can occur near the treated nerve.

Get medical advice for worsening redness, swelling, drainage, fever, unexpected persistent numbness, or pain that is much worse after the procedure. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, severe weakness, new bladder or bowel problems, or rapidly spreading numbness. These reactions are uncommon but should not be ignored.

Ask which nerve is being targeted, how long numbness may last, what response would support the diagnosis, and when you can safely drive or return to work. Ask what to do if pain returns after the anaesthetic wears off.
