Is Musculoskeletal CT Scan Done with Weight-Bearing CT?

Short answer
A musculoskeletal CT scan can be performed with weight-bearing CT in selected cases when joint position under load matters.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main purpose
- Shows selected bones and joints while they carry load
- Not universal
- Suitability depends on the body region and clinical question
- Preparation
- Mention balance limits, pregnancy, surgery, or severe pain
What this means
Standard CT usually captures the body while you are supported on the scanner table. Weight-bearing CT is designed to image certain bones and joints while you stand or place load through the limb. This can show alignment, joint spacing, or movement-related positioning that may look different without load. It is not needed for every musculoskeletal problem. The body region, your ability to stand safely, the suspected condition, and local equipment determine whether it is appropriate.
What to do before the scan
Tell the imaging team about pain, balance problems, recent surgery, pregnancy, or difficulty standing. Wear clothing without metal and follow instructions about footwear or supports. During the scan, remain as still as possible and report if the position becomes unsafe or too painful. Bring prior reports or images if requested, because they can help the radiologist compare findings. Weight-bearing imaging does not replace a physical examination or other scans when soft tissues need closer assessment.
When to seek care
Contact the referring clinician promptly if you cannot bear weight after an injury, or if pain is accompanied by obvious deformity, rapidly increasing swelling, numbness, or a cold or discoloured foot or hand. These symptoms may need assessment before routine imaging. After the scan, seek advice for new severe pain or difficulty using the limb. Your clinician should interpret the images alongside your symptoms and examination rather than relying on the scan alone.
Questions for your doctor
Ask why weight-bearing images are useful for your problem, whether you must stand during the scan, what alternatives exist, and when the report will guide treatment.

Questions people ask
Is weight-bearing CT the same as ordinary CT?
Both use CT imaging, but weight-bearing CT is designed to capture selected anatomy while it is loaded rather than fully supported.
Can I have weight-bearing CT if standing hurts?
Tell the imaging team beforehand; they can decide whether the examination is safe or whether another approach is more suitable.
