Is minor burn treatment done with sterile wound dressing?

A sterile dressing can cover the burn, reduce rubbing from clothing, absorb light drainage, and provide a cleaner surface while the skin repairs. The right product should not stick tightly to the wound or hide signs that need review.

Treatment starts with assessing the burn’s depth, size, location, and cause. Burns involving the face, hands, feet, genitals, major joints, or a large area may need specialist assessment even when the injury first appears limited.

Cool the area under cool running water as soon as possible and remove nearby jewellery or clothing that is not stuck. Do not apply ice, butter, toothpaste, or creams that have not been recommended.

After assessment, cover the area with the dressing advised by a clinician or pharmacist and keep it clean and dry as instructed. Do not burst blisters. Change the covering if it becomes wet, dirty, loose, or soaked through, following the care instructions.

Seek urgent care for a burn caused by electricity or chemicals, a burn with white or charred skin, severe pain or numbness, or one that circles a limb or affects breathing.

Arrange prompt review if redness spreads, swelling increases, drainage develops, fever appears, or the wound becomes more painful. A dressing should not delay care when the burn is deep, extensive, or in a sensitive location.
