Is microdiscectomy done with a surgical microscope?

A surgical microscope provides an enlarged, illuminated view through a small operative field. During microdiscectomy, this can help the surgeon identify the affected nerve root, gently move nearby tissue, and remove the disc material pressing on the nerve. The exact approach and equipment vary between surgeons and cases.

The microscope does not remove the need for careful diagnosis. Leg pain, numbness, weakness, scan findings, and the duration or progression of symptoms all help determine whether microdiscectomy is appropriate. The aim is usually to relieve nerve compression while limiting disruption to surrounding structures.

Ask which symptoms the operation is intended to address and whether the surgeon plans a microscope-assisted or another magnified approach. After surgery, follow instructions on walking, wound care, lifting, bending, and driving. Gentle activity is often increased gradually, while heavy lifting and forceful twisting wait until the team confirms they are suitable.

Nerve symptoms may not change at the same pace as the incision. Keep follow-up appointments so strength, sensation, pain, and function can be checked rather than judged by the wound alone.
